About My Work

As a whole, my artwork explores physical locations of mercy by visually depicting human figures, portraits, places, objects and moments of interaction. I aim to capture the delicate and whimsical existence within the contemporary, and am particularly interested in focusing on how the daily routine calls forth a sense of unity amongst humanity, despite our individualistic tendencies and locations. Ranging from the context of figures within a space, portraits, kitchen scenery, or food, my mark-making, layering, shading, texture, and pattern convey that life is worthy of depiction and much of our uniqueness is actually a collection of other people, places, and experiences. By juxtaposing abstraction with reality, my work utilizes the essence of a specific style to convey noteworthy emotions and personalities of a particular subject matter.

While my art is consistently shifting in terms of composition and technique, I am steadily relying on theologically sound ideas to inform my production. I am deeply inspired by Biblical concepts, and use these notions to shape my artistic practice. Each piece is an attempt to present an understanding of identity and hope despite notable properties of internal and external disorder. Though humanity and creation is flawed, I am convinced that brokenness is redemptive; therefore, much of my work involves mark-making, pattern, and abstraction to emphasize the presence of repetitive shortcoming, even in the midst of beautiful provision. Much of my pieces start with simple drawings and minimal color, but my final pieces include a variety of marks, layers, and color combinations to build contrast and juxtapose blemish with esteem. I hope that my work prompts the viewer to recognize their own imperfections, but ultimately pushes them towards a sense of humility rather than objection; for myself, I have come to realize that there is transformative grace and mercy for my instinctually destructive nature: by accepting a flaw, intentional process will redeem it. This rings true in both my creative process and my daily living. My drawings, paintings, prints, and illustrations all intentionally proclaim a message of grace by combining color with shade, light with dark, straight with curvy, whimsy with standard, ink with graphite and so on.

By developing art that pulls from both fauvism and realism, I set my work up to undeniably juxtapose itself. Painting, illustrating, and drawing is a physical demonstration of my human condition: a build up of many layers and contrasts, both good and bad, that exist as an intricate whole.
